Last year in July of 2012, I took a trip down to the great amazing AussieLand. When I got there I decided to plan a trip for my last week to cage dive with the majestic great white shark! After researching countless flights, planning, and rerouting my trip I flew from Melbourne to Port Lincoln to seek out these awe inspiring creatures.
I went out with Calypso Star Charters, www.sharkcagediving.com.au, and had an amazing time. Their charter go out for a full day (leave before sunrise and return after sunset), whereas others, usually built for research parties, go out for 3 days or more. They provided breakfast, snacks, and a very yummy lunch included in the charter price. The crew is friendly, helpful, and make great conversation, they know these waters and can tell you all about what’s down under the swells, what you can and should eat (we went fishing when they started to chum, I know, unfair… But you can take dinner home with you!), and what it’s like being out on the water. Over the course of the day we saw 2 great whites, mind you they are wild creatures and cannot be guaranteed to appear, they are not at your beck and call, and THEY WERE PHENOMENAL! I made some pretty great friends on the sea and this video was shot by a mother and her son, visiting from the states. ^_^ Many people go during the summer months and I have heard the trips can get quite crowded during those times, I suggest going during the winter. I went in July, really during peak winter months, and YES the water was cold, BUT our charter was the perfect number of people and we were able to get in the water several times. It has also been said that there are more great whites during winter months.
While in Port Lincoln I stayed at an AMAZING hostel, The Port Lincoln YHA, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Port-Lincoln-YHA/438021959556140! Should you head down to Port Lincoln, which I highly recommend you should at least once in your life, I recommend staying there. When I was there they had a front house that I stayed in, ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Full amenities, comfortable beds, great people, AND a GREAT DEAL! Since then they have opened up a brand new facility in the back complete with photo op cage with shark included and also a slew of great amenities, like free wifi, private rooms, and great kitchen set up (you know how much I love that!).
I didn’t get to see much of the town, as I flew in quite late and flew out early the morning after my dive, but the people and the things I did experience were truly exceptional.
All in all I would do it again in a heartbeat! One day I’ll head back to meet those great creatures face to face again and hopefully you will too!
I’ll provide the links to both again as well as their trip advisor pages.
